The music of Waitaki Boys’ High School Hall of Memories pipe organ will ring out again.

The Waitaki Heritage Fund has granted $15,000 to restore the 92-year-old organ.

The organ was installed in 1931, built by Lawton and Osborn and designed by Christchurch Cathedral organist John Christopher Bradshaw.

It was opened with a performance by Dr Bradshaw on December 8, 1931.

Before being electrified in 1967, the organ ran on a tubular pneumatic system.

The last major restoration was in 1996, where the organ was removed and new wiring was put in, which involved climbing inside the walls to reach the organ chambers.

The South Island Organ Company, which completed the 1996 restoration, would also undertake this restoration, as it was the only South Island company with the knowledge and skills.

The restoration is expected to take a year or two, along with other restoration work planned for the Hall of Memories.

Despite ownership of the Category 1 Historic Place being transferred to the Ministry of Education earlier this year, the organ remains under the Hall of Memories Trust.

The organ was most recently played during the Victorian Heritage celebrations in November by Helen Lukman-Fox.

The performance was gold-coin entry, with the money raised going towards the organ’s restoration.
