Emotions were running high as Carisbrook School year 8 pupils said a final goodbye to their school on the last day of the year.

Office manager Karen Scott said even after the bell rang at 1pm and the pupils could go home, they chose to hang around and take in the last few moments at the school.

"They’re just emotional and they’re going to miss their friends," she said.

The pupils would be going to different high schools all over Dunedin next year.

However, they would be back to check in when they had the chance, Ms Scott said.

All schools in New Zealand are required to finish the year by the end of today and are set to resume by January 29 at the earliest.
