Amnesty ‘Write for Rights’ event

Amnesty International Dunedin will host a "Write for Rights" event tomorrow from 10am-2pm at Dunedin Public Library, to mark International Human Rights Day.

Local people are invited to show their support by coming along and signing letters for prisoners of conscience — people who have been detained unjustifiably.

The group will also be toasting the release of Senator Leila de Lima from prison in Manila, Philippines.

A 64-year-old lawyer, mother of two sons and senator in the Philippines Parliament, Ms de Lima had dared to openly question the regime of Rodrigo Duterte. She had been detained for seven years without trial.

Amnesty International Dunedin took on the case of Ms de Lima four years ago, taking an array of actions on her behalf, and is overjoyed she has been released.
