The police shooting of a drug-addicted hostage-taker at a Whangarei cellphone shop last weekend has prompted the owners to take up the fight against P.
Lee Jane Mettam, 37, was shot dead by police after robbing the Vodafone store and taking a 29-year-old shop assistant hostage last Thursday.
It was later revealed that Ms Mettam had become a drug addict after getting into bad company.
Vodafone First Mobile owners Brett Sawyer and Lynn MacCarthy-Morrogh said the ordeal had convinced them something had to be done about the scourge of P.
"It's just the germ of an idea but we really want to make something positive come out of a bad incident...we want to turn this thing around," they told The Northern Advocate.
Deciding exactly what to do would "require a lot of thought and talking to the right people".
Ms Mettam was shot dead after opening the shop door and pointing a weapon which turned out to be an air rifle at a police officer taking cover across the street.
Separate inquiries are continuing by police and the Independent Police Conduct Authority in the first fatal shooting of a woman by police in New Zealand.
