Suggestions on what flag should represent Dunedin’s St Clair have flown in.
The centenary of St Clair Esplanade’s historic Hydro building will be celebrated next year and, to commemorate the milestone, building trustee Katherine Greer launched a competition to design a distinctive St Clair flag to fly from its flagpole.
Ms Greer said she had received more than 100 suggestions for the flag, from more than 60 people.
They included more than 40 separate entries from Grant’s Braes School.
Teacher Kate Pinnock said the school hosted three sessions on flags and graphic design to help encourage the pupils’ ideas.
"They learned loads of things from the exercise.
"Not only did they learn about flags and graphic design, they also got a real sense of the community."
The year 3 pupils studied old photographs of St Clair and learned about its history for inspiration, Ms Pinnock said.
"There were lots of different designs; a lot of them featured the beach in some way.
Arlo Horan, 8, said his design took about half a day to complete and he really enjoyed the experience.
Hayley Hudson, 7, said she enjoyed designing the swirls in the middle of her flag, and would "definitely" do something like that again.
Ms Greer said she was impressed with the range and originality of their contributions.
"We were looking for something that was unique for St Clair, nothing has been ruled out.
"Some people put in several entries. There was a lot of creativity."
Such was the standard of entries that all would be put before the judging panel today.
"Designing a flag is an interesting process.
"It’s about creating an abstract representation of the community."
