A driftwood tepee built near Kaka Point by three South Otago children three years ago to mark the death of their beloved grandad has caught the attention and hearts of locals and tourists.
It was built in March 2011 by Aedan, Brennan and Mackenzie Dinnissen and their nana Rosa MacPherson.
One March afternoon three years ago Mrs MacPherson and the three Dinnissen grandchildren (then aged 7, 6, and 3 respectively) gathered driftwood and other flotsam on the beach at Port Molyneux near Kaka Point.
''We gathered all sorts just to add some character. We had a bathroom sink, boots, a clothes line, even a flag and stump table, and a kettle for the outside pretend fireplace,'' Mrs MacPherson said.
Her husband Davie died on February 25, 2011.
She and the children often visited the tepee, as did others who strengthened and fixed the memorial structure.
Mrs MacPherson said others added their own touches to the tepee and tourists often had their photos taken there.
