An Alexandra teenager is making her mark on New Zealand's cycling scene one race at a time, as she continues to win national titles.

Sophie Williamson (14), of Dunstan High School, is the New Zealand champion for her age group in three track disciplines.

She has also been successful on the road, winning both the time trial and road race titles at the national club championships held in Wanganui last week.

Sophie recently competed in the New Zealand secondary school championships, held in Levin, which she attended with six fellow Dunstan pupils.

At the national event, Sophie won the under-15 girls points track race, and she competed in an under-17 novice tour race.

The championship was Sophie's fourth, and followed her first participation in the New Zealand secondary school individual cycling championship, which was held in Mt Wellington, Auckland, from September 12 to 14.

Sophie was one of just two South Island competitors at the event, which included 458 other participants.

She performed well at the championship.

In her under-15 category, Sophie came first in the 4km time trial and steep 1km hill climb and second in the points race criterium, and she went on to win the overall age group.

Sophie follows in her brothers' tracks in cycling, a sport which is also enjoyed by her parents.

The family toured parts of Europe by cycle four years ago, and managed to watch some of the Tour de France while on their six-week journey.

Sophie's brothers, James (19) and Patrick (17), have also competed in, and won titles at, national secondary school competitions.

All family members belong to the Central Otago Wakatipu Cycle Club, which holds races regularly.

Sophie is the club's youngest member.

Regular racing around Alexandra's roads, in addition to trips to Invercargill's world-class indoor velodrome, keep her in top form for competitions.
