Gang presence at fatal motorway crash

Motorcyclists wearing gang insignia were seen at the scene of a fatal crash on Dunedin’s Northern Motorway yesterday morning.

The crash, involving a car and a motorcycle, happened shortly after 10am on State Highway 1, south of Waitati, a police spokesman said.

A motorcyclist died at the scene.

There were no other injuries.

A short time before the crash a group of motorcyclists drove through Dunedin, heading north.

Several motorcyclists were seen at the crash site wearing red T-shirts adorned with the emblem of Bandidos.

Police would not provide any information when asked about the presence of the gang at the scene.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) and Hato Hone St John joined police at the scene.

A St John spokesman said it dispatched one ambulance and a rapid response vehicle.
