Warm weather should allay frost fears

Vineyard owners are hoping the risk of another summer frost will recede with the high pressure system approaching the country.

An out-of-season frost caused some minor damage to some vineyards 10 days ago, and the region came close to another on Sunday night.

There were some reports of ice on vehicle windscreens in the Wanaka area, although in most places overnight temperatures were slightly milder.

Central Otago Winegrowers Association president James Dicey said none of the alarms in the vineyards he manages went off on Sunday night but he described the frost earlier in January as ''extraordinary''.

''I have never even had an alarm go off before the middle of February, so to have something to go off in the middle of January, on the 18th, and have some damage from it, is unheard of.''

Mr Dicey said there had been a very warm start to the summer.

''We just need a warm February now.''

He was expecting another cool night last night but with rising temperatures through the week.

Mr Dicey was attending a function at the French embassy in Wellington yesterday as part of the visit by a delegation from Burgundy seeking New Zealand support for their bid to get Unesco World Heritage status.

The delegation was due to arrive in Queenstown last night.
