Dogs safe at home

The distraught Oamaru owner of two ''dearly loved'' dogs who went missing early on Sunday morning was yesterday happy to have them home again.

The woman, who did not want to be named, said one dog was found wandering in Parsons Rd and the other made its own way home.

Initially, it was thought the two bull mastiffs, both with microchips, had been stolen.

The fence of their pen appeared to have been cut.

But yesterday the woman said the male weighed about 70kg and she now wondered if somehow he had split the fence open and both had escaped.

Oamaru police were notified the dogs, the male and a female who weighed about 35kg, had gone missing about 1.30am on Sunday.

The owner was worried because one of the dogs was on daily medication.

News of the missing dogs and an appeal to watch for them in case they had been relocated was put out on Facebook by the Dog Rescue Dunedin Charitable Trust.
