The Northern Community Board secured $100,000 from the government’s three waters reform Better Off funding package to develop the park.
The playground redevelopment work was planned to start late this year and would be at the site of the existing playground on Diana St.
The design concept was developed in conjunction with community feedback received during last year’s Lumsden Gala Day.
Its plan would integrate the unique heritage of Lumsden and bring the railway theme to the playground. Some existing playground elements would be staying, making it a rich sensory play experience for children to look forward to.
Northern Community Board chairman Greg Tither said the board was excited to see the project come to fruition.
"It will be a great community asset."
A Southland District Council spokesman said soil testing had been done in the playground area due to the site being an old railway station and yard for storing materials.
The main playground area returned clear samples while the perimeter showed very low levels of hydrocarbons. But these did not pose any risk to health, he said.
Soil excavated during the construction phase of the project would be disposed of at landfill.
Public feedback is being sought on interactive panels to be included in the development.

Hard copies of the voting forms are also available at the council’s Lumsden area office and voting closes on Monday.
