Pupils from Concord School welcomed classmates from Sara Cohen School at the opening of the second satellite classroom at their school yesterday.
Sara Cohen School principal Matthew Tofia said the new classroom would give pupils access to a special education that included therapists and high staff-to-student ratios.
Mr Tofia said the new classroom had features such as ceiling hoists to support children, breakout spaces, sensory equipment and cooking facilities to focus on functional skills.
"We focus on the things that are going to make their lives better and help them to have more independent lives."
As a part of the focus on functional skills the classroom was fitted with three toilets; a high-dependency toilet, a supported toilet and an independent toilet.
"Because that’s one of the key areas everybody needs to feel comfortable being able to operate, especially for our kids and it’s a long-term process."
Mr Tofia said the school had a huge role pressure and the new classroom was alleviating some of it.
Concord School principal Steve Turnbull said there had been a Sara Cohen School satellite classroom at Concord School for more than 20 years already and the pupils had integrated really well together.
"The students learn so much from each other in the playground and interacting so they are a really valued and special part of Concord School."
