Oamaru Hospital diabetes nurse Janet Amies and diabetes clinic nurse Pat McKeown demonstrate on Rotary Club of Waitaki president Paul Mortimer yesterday how a new diabetes monitor donated by the club will be used by diabetics.

The $5000 iPro2 monitor is the second unit for the hospital, which was needed because of the demand and the valuable information it provides by recording glucose levels over 24 hours for five days.

A probe is inserted into subcutaneous tissue which reads a new value every five minutes, transmitting readings on high and low blood sugar and patterns which would otherwise be missed.

The recorder is then loaded into a reader, which transfers the information to a computer.

That helps the diabetes team and patients understand how glucose levels are affected by sleep, meals, activity and medication through the 24 hours, leading to better management.

Club member Denis Dove used the monitor and found it so valuable he persuaded the club to give a second.
