The Central Otago council heard last week the trail trust had used all the funds granted by the Government, Central Lakes Trust and Otago Community Trust but an extra two toilets were needed to ''ensure visitors are experiencing a quality visit'', a report by council parks and recreation manager Mat Begg said.
Toilets are available along the 73km trail at Lake Roxburgh village, Roxburgh, Pinders Pond, Millers Flat and Lawrence.
At its meeting on Thursday, the Clutha District Council agreed to grant $10,000 for a Norski toilet near the Big Hill railway tunnel, with conditions.
Council chief executive Charles Hakkaart said the council wanted to have the final make and type of toilet approved by its district assets committee.
Mr Hakkaart said similar toilets in Clutha needed holding tanks, requiring regular servicing. The council wanted to ensure any holding tank was the correct size and that pumping out of the tank happened as needed.
Lawrence-Tuapeka ward councillor Geoff Blackmore said the site was a good choice - accessible from both the trail and the road, but hidden.
Cr Hamish Anderson said it was important to have a good quality toilet that was ''readily serviceable''.
No-one from the trust was present to speak to the Clutha District Council about the request.
When questioned by Central Otago councillors about funding, trust member Graham Dillon said sale of the maintenance contribution tags had slowed which was ''concerning''.
Purchase of the contribution tags is voluntary but it is expected to help both the Clutha Gold and Roxburgh Gorge trusts, which are working together, fund maintenance of both trails.
It was not known how many tags had been sold.
The trails are expected to cost $50,000 to $100,000 each per year in maintenance.
The Central Otago council agreed to grant the Clutha Gold Trail trust $11,000 for a Norski toilet, the same as ones used in national parks, district and regional council parks and reserves around the country.
It will be placed in the Craig Flat area, just south of the Talla Burn power station.
The 34km Roxburgh Gorge trail, of which about a third is covered by boat at a cost of $95 per person, and the Clutha Gold trail were officially opened on October 24.
