Group formed to help WDC with coastal road

A community group has been set up to work with the Waitaki District Council on the future of the Oamaru-Kakanui-Waianakarua coast road, which is threatened by sea erosion.

The group, established from a meeting at Kakanui last month, appointed Peter Amyes as spokesman and will be looking for extra members.

It follows continued erosion of the coastal road, a major tourist route in the district. The latest erosion just south of All Day Bay reduced the coast road to a single lane.

Two major diversions have been constructed around eroded sections in the past five years, including shutting a section more than 1km long and upgrading Gardners Rd to take diverted traffic.

Various solutions have been suggested in reports to the council, but the future of the road remains uncertain.

Council roading manager Michael Voss said the last report in July outlined options, which led to the request for the community group to review options and potential solutions to keep the route open.

It would look at the coastal road from the physical works side as well as how it fitted into the wellbeing of the wider community as a valuable asset to the district.

The group would be responsible for that, with restricted input from the council apart from technical guidance, Mr Voss said.
