Suspended driver shopped, stopped, copped

A 24-year-old known to police for driving while suspended was allowed to complete his grocery shopping before police nabbed him as he tried to drive off from a central Dunedin supermarket.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said a ‘‘known male’’ was seen getting out of a vehicle and entering the centre city Countdown, next to the Dunedin Central Police Station, at 11.30am on Saturday.

Police waited outside the supermarket for the man to return to the vehicle.

When it left the car park, they stopped him, Snr Sgt Bond said.

The man had bail conditions not to drive and was also a suspended driver.

He was held for court today and his bail was opposed.

The man was at present facing six separate charges of driving while disqualified, Snr Sgt Bond said.
