Build begins on boat club wharf

Construction began yesterday on a new wharf in Broad Bay, and the Dunedin club behind it hopes it is just the start of a new chapter in time for its centenary.

The work beginning at Broad Bay Boat Club comes after eight years of planning.

The club received funding of $150,000 from the Otago Community Trust and $50,000 from the Alexander McMillan Trust two years ago, which went towards the cost of building the new wharf.

Committee member Brent Patterson said piling was expected to begin today, in order to get the work done in winter while nobody was swimming.

About 60 piles, each 9m long, would be erected to provide the foundations of the new wharf.

He was pleased to see work being done after so long.

"It’s amazing and it is such a huge thing for the community, it really is.

"So many people are going to be happy to see it go in," he said.

It was hoped further work could then be done, including a new clubhouse and boat shed in time for the club’s centenary on September 24, which was the first day of sailing season.

The group would need to raise a lot more money to cover the $1 million price tag for the entire project.

Mr Patterson hoped that goal could be reached.

"Our funders have been very generous so far.

"We’re hoping now the project has started we can keep the ball rolling."
