Every available firefighter in Dunedin was rushed to an auto dismantlers in Burnside this morning where a tyre fire sent thick smoke into the air.
Eight fire appliances were at the old Burnside freezing works battling acrid smoke to get to the pile of 200-300 tyres.
Nobody was inside the building.
The fire is now under control and the building is being ventilated.
Senior Station Officer Rob Torrance told the Otago Daily Times at the scene that it was "extremely difficult" to get to the source of the fire through the thick smoke.
A Fire Service spokesman said firefighters were called to an Eclipse Rd property at 9.45am, following multiple reports of a car fire.
