Donation from boat show helps coastguard

Members of the Riverton Coastguard will know exactly where they are.

The group has been given equipment by the Southland Boat Show that will help it to keep rescuing people and saving lives.

Media liaison Tim West said the equipment included a GPS for the group’s jetski.

"We need all the safety equipment as a normal boat would have, so a GPS is incredibly important," he said.

"We live on a stretch of water where there's two rivers feeding into an estuary. So we need something to get across the estuary and the rivers [are] pretty fast. And this wee baby here can do it and [now] safer."

Any donations were treasured as Riverton Coastguard was made up of about 20 volunteers, he said.

Because boats now mostly had all the safety equipment they needed, the coastguard was required for fewer rescues than in the past.

"We're probably getting about maybe 10 or 12 callouts a year and varying between fuel and flat batteries.

"But we do get that big call once every couple of years where all hell breaks loose. And we're needed pretty smartly to be out on the water to save lives."

Southland Boat Show convener Doug Riley said part of the show’s profits supported boating throughout the region such as the Riverton Coastguard.

He was pleased to be able to donate the equipment.
