Volunteers are helping put Dunedin on the map.

Dunedin’s Allys Clipsham (referee liaison), Melanie Reynolds (accreditation), Grant Williams (vehicle dispatch) and Daniel Harmes (airport volunteer) have put their hands up to help at the Fifa Women’s World Cup in July.

They met for the first time yesterday at the uniform unveiling at Forsyth Barr Stadium, but three have been involved in large events before.

Clipsham, who works for Southern Football, volunteered at the London Olympics — and was even a torch bearer — Reynolds helped at the Rugby World Cup in 2011, Cricket World Cups (men’s and women’s) and the Fifa under-20 and under-17 events, while Williams volunteered at the Rugby World Cup.

Harmes, who is volunteering for the first time, said the event was "awesome" for women’s sport.

"I really enjoy women’s football for one thing," Harmes said.

"I’ve got young girls and I want to show them that they can push on in to high performance sports, and be aspirational, and have big dreams.

"Having that here, hosting what is going to be a huge ... global event, here in Dunedin — it’s just an opportunity you can’t miss."

Asked why he wanted to volunteer again, Williams said "it’s this", pointing to the group of people he just met.

"It’s meeting people like this and making those connections with people that you don’t normally," Williams said.

"But it’s also about giving back to the sport and promote what’s going to be an awesome event."
