The man, who declined to be named, said he had been reading in bed when the car ploughed through the concreted-in pillar outside, sending bricks and glass flying towards him on Tuesday evening.
At first he assumed someone had been throwing bricks through his window, one landing either side of his bed.
The incident had been "a big scare" but he escaped physically unscathed, he said.
The car was driven by a woman who allegedly head-butted a police officer after fleeing from the scene.
The man's wife said he was lucky to be alive and the offender was at an age where she was old enough to know better — she hoped the dogs had taken a "little nibble" when she was apprehended.
Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said officers were called to the Church St house about 9.45pm on Tuesday.
A police dog team was called to track her and she was arrested for careless driving, sustaining a minor dog bite in the process.
The woman was belligerent to police and — while in handcuffs — the woman allegedly head-butted an officer, who was not badly injured, Snr Sgt Bond said.
Because of her aggressive demeanour, officers were not able to complete drink-driving procedures.
The woman was charged with careless driving, assaulting police and refusing to give a blood sample.
