Charlie - the cat that was tied in a pillowcase and dumped on a Dunedin roof - was feasting on fish after returning home to Mosgiel yesterday.

Beneficiary Paia Munro (22) said she was surprised to see her missing cat on the front page of the Otago Daily Times yesterday.

''She had just completely vanished and then we saw Charlie in the paper - looking much skinnier.''

Charlie had been missing from her Mosgiel flat for a fortnight and she had feared the worst.

Miss Munro was perplexed as to how a home-loving Mosgiel cat had ended up in a tied pillowcase dumped on the roof of the four-storey Conservation House earlier this week.

''How the heck did she get there? It's really worrying.''

Charlie was being kept inside for fear somebody could take her.

''I'm not letting her out of my sight for a wee bit.''

She hoped the person who dumped Charlie would get the justice they deserved.

''What they did was just absolutely disgusting.''

After leaving the Otago SPCA, Charlie spent yesterday eating fresh fish and sunbathing, Miss Munro said.

She adopted Charlie about two months ago when a friend's grandmother moved into a rest-home.

Miss Munro was thankful for Department of Conservation ranger Arnie Elbers investigating the pillowcase on the roof.

The thought of Charlie spending the night outside in a pillowcase on a stormy night of thunder was upsetting.

''She would have been terrified.''

SPCA Otago animal manager Grace Hepburn said the Otago SPCA was still seeking any information about the dumping of Charlie and wanted anyone with information to contact the animal shelter.

''Charlie's gone all the way from Mosgiel into the city centre so she had to have got there somehow.''
