Preparing for a royal high tea fundraiser

It is time to dust off the bone China tea set and crack out the cake stands in Invercargill.

The South Alive’s events team are readying themselves for a once-in-a-lifetime event.

It will be a sell-out crowd gathering tomorrow at South Alive on Grace St, for a Right Royal High Tea.

Cucumber sandwiches, Reuben pinwheels, scones and cream, hazelnut truffles and cinnamon oysters will all be gracing the three-tiered cake stands to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III.

None of the people running the event could remember the previous coronation, that of Queen Elizabeth II, as most were either too young or not yet born.

Event cook Norma Anderson said she had been experimenting with gluten-free recipes to ensure no-one missed out the tasty morsels.

Former Southland Hospital head of surgery and board chairman Murray Pfeifer will be the guest speaker.

Funds raised from the event will support the Cancer Society.

Mrs Anderson said if the King was to turn up to South Alive, they could absolutely guarantee he would not get a slice of the broad-bean and spinach quiche, also known as Coronation Quiche, requested by the new monarch for his special day.

"He would be out of luck", as she was unable to convince the catering team to include it on the menu after it had been voted off with a resounding no.

But he would find people wearing bling, pearls, fascinators and tiaras for the celebration, she said.
