A Dunedin City Council spokesman said the work involved replacing three old sports field lighting towers that were "at the end of their useful lives".
The new lights would provide more opportunities for sports codes to train at night, he said.
The floodlights were a response to a recent sports facilities review which identified inadequate lighting as an issue.
The new lights were LEDs and would use significantly less power than the older lights, the spokesman said.
The cost of the work would be about $65,000.
