Speedway: Plenty of action as Island Park racing season starts

There should be plenty for speedway enthusiasts to get revved up about this season.

Promoter Matt Stewart said racing would start at Island Park Speedway tonight with all the regular grades. Street stocks, saloons, production saloons and six-shooters would be in action, and on November 9 there would also be a fireworks display.

In mid-December, the venue will host a leg of the DHL series. Golf caddy Steve Williams will make an appearance along with a lot of the top drivers from around the country.

That competition is held over seven nights, starting in Invercargill and making its way up the South Island.

''That is one of our bigger events, with having Steve Williams there and a lot of North Islanders,'' Stewart said.

''The sprint cars are coming later on for the War of the Wings. That is the same sort of thing - it is a travelling series.

''They are the big boys. They weigh 400kg and have about 500hp. They're insane machines.''

The Dunedin round of War of the Wings is in February.

In January, some of the South Island's best super-saloons will converge on Beachlands for the Elf Cup series, and next season the venue will host the New Zealand Street Stocks Grand Prix.
