Drink-driver crashed twice

An Oamaru drink-driver who was more than five times the legal limit took out two fences on both sides of the same road.

At 10pm on March 31, Travis Reekie (23) was driving north on Cormacks-Kia Ora Rd despite being at least five times over the legal limit, the Oamaru District Court heard this week.

Crossing the centreline, he entered a ditch on the side of the road, crashing into a fence partially made of concrete.

Moments after freeing himself from the ditch, the man travelled across the centreline again — veering into another ditch and crashing into the fence on the opposite side of the road.

Police located Reekie behind the wheel of his Ford Fairmont at the crash site.

He smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech and struggled to maintain his balance, before revealing a breath alcohol level of 1112mcg.

"Your demon is booze," Judge Anthony Walsh said, as he encouraged the man to adjust his drinking.

"You’ve got a bright future ahead of you ... Men’s prison is no place for you."

Reekie was ordered to pay a $1000 fine and cover the damage he caused to both fences, which totalled about $2500.

He was sentenced to six months’ supervision and disqualified for 28 days, after which time he would be subject to alcohol-interlock provisions.
