Anzac Day forecast to be warm, dry

Rain forecast for the start of next week will depart on Tuesday, making way for a balmy Anzac Day this year.

A MetService spokeswoman said it was still too early to make a faultless forecast for the weather, but at this stage, it looked likely to be a dry, partly cloudy day with light winds and temperatures reaching 17degC in many parts of Otago and Southland.

Returned and Services’ Association Otago and Southland district president Lox Kellas said he could not take credit for the forecast.

"We left it up to the chaplin to speak to ‘his superior’ at ‘head office’ and sort out the weather for us."

Mr Kellas said the speaker at this year’s Dunedin Dawn Service would be New Zealand Army (Reserves) assistant chief Colonel Amanda Jane Brosnan and she would be accompanied by United Kingdom and Australian dignitaries.

It will be one of many services held at cenotaphs around the southern region.

He hoped the forecast would encourage large numbers of people around the region to attend their local Anzac Day services.

"Since the Covid-19 pandemic, we’ve not been able to attract large crowds.

"I’m hoping this year, it will return to pre-pandemic levels with up to 10,000 people coming along to the Dunedin Dawn Service. If it’s good [weather], they’ll be there."
