Drunken crash damages shop, truck, car

A man who drove drunk crashed into a truck which then veered into The Store at Centre Bush.

Jonathan Lloyd Cooney (48), driver, of Limehills, appeared in the Invercargill District Court before Judge Bernadette Farnan on Thursday.

He was for sentence on two charges of drink-driving (166mg) causing injury at Centre Bush on October 19 last year.

It was about 6pm when Cooney pulled out from where he was parked in front of the store, turning about 270 degrees in a clockwise direction.

He was across the southbound lane of State Highway 6 when a truck travelling south collided with his car.

"After initial impact, the truck veered into the front of The Store."

The shop, and both vehicles were extensively damaged in the crash.

Two passengers in the truck received minor injuries.

Cooney’s lawyer Keith Owen said his client had drunk 15 bottles the day before but because his client had cirrhosis of the liver this would still cause his reading to be high.

Cooney was sentenced to six months’ community detention, 12 months’ supervision, disqualified 28 days, alcohol interlock provisions and was ordered to pay $2446.14 reparation.
