Dunedin students have smashed their fundraising goals in a Relay for Life event at Otago University, raising more than $100,000 for cancer research.

The Relay For Life Otago Students ran from 6pm Saturday to 6am yesterday.

It involved 50 teams walking and running around the university clocktower area for 12 hours, participants taking turns to ensure that at least one member was always carrying their baton.

New Zealand Cancer Society Otago and Southland Division marketing and fundraising manager Jonet Warhurst said the event had been amazing, and the students enthusiastically getting behind it had made it a success.

"It went really, really well."

About 600 students and school pupils had attended, including as volunteers to help run the event, Ms Warhurst said.

The candlelight ceremony had been a standout part of the event and at least eight students had shaved their hair to help raise money for cancer research.

The event co-ordinator had remarked it was the most inspiring event she had ever attended, Ms Warhurst said.

As of yesterday evening, the event had raised $114,956 of its $100,000 goal.

It also featured live music, entertainment and various other activities.
