Drive-by suspect in court

A man charged with attempted murder following a central Dunedin drive-by shooting has been granted name suppression.

The 25-year-old defendant appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday after the incident in Thomas Burns St near the skateboard park last week.

According to court documents, the defendant had attempted to murder "persons unknown", a charge carrying a maximum penalty of 14 years’ imprisonment.

Police confirmed the man’s arrest on Tuesday after armed officers swooped on a Highgate property in Roslyn.

Detective Sergeant Hayden Smale urged anyone with information regarding the movements of a 2005 silver BMW, registration GCE188, to come forward.

Earlier, Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said occupants of a vehicle spotted a car stopped at traffic lights in Thomas Burns St, near the pedestrian overbridge.

They allegedly turned back and a passenger fired a shot at an occupied car.

The victim fled the scene, shaken but uninjured.

Damage to the bonnet of the car suggested a shotgun had been used, Snr Sgt Bond said.

Defence counsel John Westgate made no application for bail and his client was remanded in custody pending his next appearance in the High Court at Dunedin in April.

A tearful supporter of the defendant said "love you, son", as he was led back to the cells following yesterday’s brief hearing.
