Strong winds bring down trees in Dunedin

Firefighters were called to assist with a downed tree in central Dunedin after high winds last night.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said crews were called to Serpentine Avenue about 3.55am today.

The road was blocked and firefighters assisted with scene safety, the spokesman said.

A Dunedin City Council spokesman said winds reached almost 74kmh about 3.30am.

The tree was caught in power lines and Delta was called to assist.

Council contractors were also called to a minor slip in Vauxhall due to the weather, the spokesman said.
