Breaking one Otago record was not enough for Jorja Gibbons.

So she went and broke three.

The Queen’s High School athlete broke the girls long jump, 100m and 200m records at the Otago secondary school athletics championships at the weekend.

The 16-year-old broke the senior long jump record with her jump of 5.42m, surpassing the previous record of 5.35m.

She backed up her success in the pit with a good day on the track.

She finished the 100m in 12.23sec, beating a previous record of 12.30sec, and the 200m with her time of 24.97sec, shaving 0.69sec off the previous record.

Renee Willis also showed her strength, breaking the senior girls shot put and hammer throw records.

The St Hilda’s Collegiate School athlete threw 13.64m in the shot put, surpassing the previous 12.68m record, and a big 46.61m in the hammer throw, adding 5.54m to the previous record.

It was a big event for smashing Otago records — seven were broken in total.

Sarah Evans (Taieri College) broke the under-15 girls javelin record with her throw of 34.30m, beating the previous mark of 29.20m and Alexa Duff (Columba College) broke the senior javelin with her throw of 40.76m, flying past the previous 36.54m record.

On the track, Alex Walker (John McGlashan College) broke the under-14 boys 100m in 11.94sec, 0.05sec faster that the prior record.

Catherine Lund (Otago Girls’ High School) continued her form, winning the girls senior 3000m in 9min 47.50sec. She broke the previous record of 9min 50.01sec.
