Port to Port Cruises and Wildlife Tours owner Rachel McGregor is expanding her cycle ferry service.
The service takes cyclists to and from Portobello and Port Chalmers so they can complete a full loop of the Otago Harbour, totalling 38km.
Ms McGregor at present takes cyclists on a small boat, able to carry 15 passengers and their bikes.
The new service will add a barge capable of holding 20 bikes, she said.
"I’m feeling really optimistic, I had thought of a barge years ago."
"It will soon become a main part of the business. There’s a lot more bikes starting to show up because of the track," she said.
The barge was owned by Moorings Otago owner Kevin Waters, who would travel the bikes while Ms McGregor took passengers on her boat.
Without Mr Waters, the ferry expansion would have been placed in the "too hard basket", she said.
"It’s great because the problem of purchasing a barge and hiring a driver is solved."
She anticipates the barge to be fully operational in a few weeks, after her and Mr Waters have finished modifying it.
"I’m positive it will work ... we’re ticking off those last boxes at the moment" she said.
The price for a cycle ferry is $15 plus $6 for a road bike and takes about 10 minutes to cross the harbour either way.
