Police say a 12-year-old girl hit by a ute in Port Chalmers yesterday afternoon ran out on to the road.
The girl suffered an open compound fracture to the ankle and was taken to Dunedin Hospital.
Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said the girl ran in front of a Ford Ranger which was unable to stop.
Investigations were ongoing, Snr Sgt Bond said.
