Chasing another title right thing to do: Withers

Todd Withers is more than a 3-and-D man.

And he is certainly not a one and done guy.

The 26-year-old American has signed on for a second season with the Nuggets and hopes to take his game to a new level.

He was the heart and soul of the Nuggets’ defensive effort last season. When he was not pulling in rebounds or swatting away shots, he was popping the ball in for threes.

It was a very successful recipe for the Nuggets. Withers played a key role the Nuggets reaching the playoffs and then going on to win their first NBL title proper.

He averaged 12.6 points and 8.6 rebounds. But the raw numbers do not do justice to how inspiring it was to have someone working so hard on defence.

Withers was just as enamoured.

"It was a great season last year and I really got behind the organisation. The fans were amazing and I kind of fell in love with Dunedin." Withers said.

"So I just felt it was the right thing to do to come back and try and win another championship."

Those first few hours after winning the championships did not feel real.

"It felt fake to be honest. But the next morning the guys came down with the trophy and I was like, ‘oh man we did win the championship’.

"Then you start singing and see all the posts on social media and stuff and you can’t do nothing but just smile and just be happy."

That kind of euphoria can be shortlived, though. You eventually come down off the high and then what?

Well, Withers returned home to the United States to visit with family and friends but he was back in Dunedin before too long.

He met "someone special" here and she has quickly become his rock.

"I just wanted to get back to training and Dunedin was a really good place for me to be and just focus. I’ve got a partner out in New Zealand and she is the biggest support I could possibly have."

Having refreshed, he returned to the United States to play for the Texas Legends in the NBA G League.

"It is a great jump start for what’s on next."

Withers was expected to arrive in Dunedin in early April ahead of the Nuggets’ opening game against the Manawatu Jets at the Edgar Centre on April 9 when the championship banner will be unveiled.

But the Otago Daily Times understands he may arrive earlier as he has been released from his contract with Texas.

Withers has big plans once he gets here.

"I want to be more dynamic. I want to impact the entire game and be someone the guys go to when they need a bucket, not only when they need a stop.

"I want to draw more fouls, get to the free throw line a lot more and be more than a catch-and-shoot 3-and-D guy.

"I’ve been working on it a lot and now is the time to really put it into plan."

Withers is the seventh confirmed signing for the Nuggets. He joins star center Sam Timmins, back up big Jack Andrew, swingman Josh Aitcheson and guards Darcy Knox, Joe Ahie and Matthew Bardsley.
