Meet the South's new top policeman. Inspector Andrew Coster, of Auckland, has been confirmed as the new Southern District commander.

The 38-year-old has held the position of Auckland Central area commander for the past four years, and was looking forward to starting the Dunedin-based position later this year.

''Having been born in Dunedin but never lived there, this appointment is a bit like coming back to my roots.

''I'm excited with the prospect of getting involved in the southern scene and everything that's happening there, '' Insp Coster said.

His initial focus would be on meeting those in the police and community ''who will help us to further enhance public safety''.

He would also ensure the implementation of policing excellence throughout the district, which was a national shift from reactive to prevention-focused policing.

''I'm delighted to have the opportunity to work with the people of Southern District to deliver on Police's objective that everyone is safe and feels safe.''

Police Commissioner Peter Marshall said Insp Coster would bring 16 years' experience to the role and would be an outstanding leader for Southern District.

''Andrew has built a high-performing management team in Auckland Central which has achieved significant reductions in total crime and increases in staff engagement,'' he said.

Insp Coster also had an excellent academic record, including a masters in public management. A qualified lawyer, he took a break from the police in 2004 to work for Meredith Connell in Auckland.

''I am looking forward to working with Andrew as he brings his extensive experience to bear in his new position in Southern District,'' Mr Marshall said.

Insp Coster replaces former Superintendent Bob Burns, who retired in April.
