A world-class painter visiting Dunedin has a simple message for budding artists.
Zbukvic is highly regarded and has won many awards, including the San Francisco Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019 for his contribution to the world of art.
The event organisers, Christabel O’Leary and Jenna Turnbull of PartnersWorkshops, were once students of Zbukvic’s partner Lisa Wang.
"Paint because you love it — people will sense if you don’t," Yugoslavia-born watercolour painter Joseph Zbukvic told people attending a workshop at the Dunedin Railway Station yesterday.
He had held workshops in New Zealand in the past, but this was his first time in Dunedin, he said.
"It’s a beautiful city."
During the workshop, he painted a scene of Venice and gave advice to the audience.
"Dabbing the brush should be your enemy."
"My workshop here is purely because of Lisa.
"She has an amazing legacy here," he said.
Wang is a former Dunedin resident who started her own art school in the early 2000s, Mona Lisa Art Studio.
