Sheep will give way to cyclists as international and local mountain bikers tackle elite level tracks across Matangi Station, on the outskirts of Alexandra today.

Race event organiser Sophie Gimblett said the Crankworx Summer Series New Zealand would bring Crankworx-level racing with a grassroots vibe to the Southern Lakes and Central Otago.

Crankworx originated in Whistler, in Canada, in 2004 and is a multi-stop worldwide series. This week’s summer series was a chance for local people to compete alongside international stars or simply watch the best compete.

With practice runs under their belts, today riders will tackle the trails at Matangi Station before heading to Bike Glendhu near Wanaka for a dual slalom, this weekend, followed by Cardrona and Queenstown.

The five-stage enduro at Matangi would have an excellent field of international and local pro-riders, along with a great calibre of local amateur riders, Gimblett said.

It was an opportunity to show the world what epic riding and incredible terrain Matangi Station and Central Otago had to offer.
