Voke shaking things up to get results

Auckland professional Nick Voke is in his happy place but he hopes a change of scenery this year will reignite his career.

Voke has a special affinity for the Arrowtown area and could be a wildcard at the New Zealand Open.

He won The Hills Pro-Am twice, and got engaged to his fiancee on a hill overlooking Millbrook earlier this year.

"I love the area and my fiancee wants to move down here," Voke said yesterday.

"She’s back in Iowa. Someone’s got to make the money."

Making the money — what it is all about for a pro golfer — has been a challenge for Voke (28) in recent times, and he has shaken things up in a bid to get the bank account humming again.

He made a remarkable start to his career in 2018 after turning professional, winning in his third, fifth and seventh starts in China.

But he then battled injuries and struggled to find much luck on the second-tier Korn Ferry Tour in the United States, so has decided to look in a different direction.

"I will be on the Asian Tour this year.

"It’s a big stretch coming up. I’ve got this then I go to Thailand, India, Hong Kong and back to the States, so a bit of travel coming up.

"The Korn Ferry is such a slog. It’s really difficult.

"I’ve slowly seen the bank balance decline over the last four years out there, you know.

"There’s a couple of big purses coming on the Asian Tour, and the competition isn’t as strong as what I’m used to on the Korn Ferry, so hopefully my game can trend in the right direction and I can get a few good results."

Not that Voke sounds 100% confident he is playing well enough to make a splash at the New Zealand Open this week.

"The game is a little shaky, to be perfectly honest with you.

"It was a tough stretch in Aussie there, and I had a couple of weeks off in Auckland.

"I’m close, but I’m not quite there. I’m hoping it’s close enough to click over this week."

Voke is a fan of Millbrook but he is still getting his head around some of the course layout changes.

Golfers will alternate tomorrow and Friday between the Remarkables 18 and the new Coronet layout.

"It’s a little on the shorter side compared to the rest of the course.

"I think there’s some interesting choices to make. It’ll certainly be tricky and catch a few people out.

"I really like the 17th hole for us on the weekend. Par-5, there’s a bunker on the left which is 312 yards [285m] adjusted to flight, and if you step on one and get it going, you’ve got mid-iron in.

"I think there’s going to be some fireworks coming down the stretch."

Voke missed the cut in his first New Zealand Open in 2019, but tied for 14th three years ago, the last time the tournament was held.

Toting his bag this week will be an old Iowa State college mate, Sam Vincent.
