Contest soliciting tight play scripts

The chance to have your original ''pint-sized'' play performed in Queenstown and Tenby, in Wales, is being offered by the Remarkable Theatre.

Spurred by a concept he had seen in Tenby, David Cantwell, of Arrowtown, established Pint Size Plays New Zealand, the first play from which was performed in March.

He is again seeking original scripts, by the end of November, from which eight will be chosen to be performed in March 2014 - with the winner being entered in Tenby's contest.

He discovered the concept eight years ago while on holiday in Wales and said ''their competition has now become world famous''.

''We are aiming for the same sort of success here. They [Tenby's theatre group] have been very helpful and we are hoping to have their co-operation and joint ventures.

''In Wales and here it's designed not so much for a theatre but for a pub ... for that kind of intimacy.''

The plays are limited to between five and 10 minutes with no more than three actors.

Selected plays are then given a cast and performed without the audience knowing who wrote which play.

Last year's winner was Mike Legge, whose play about a middle-aged man's struggle with technology won over voters at the SkyCity Queenstown Casino.

Anyone can enter the competition and scripts must be submitted by email, by the end of November, to: davidcantwell@xtra.co.nz
