After nearly 150 years, the longest-running event in the Waimate district is still going strong.

The Waimate Caledonian Games are back on this weekend after being cancelled due to Covid restrictions last year.

It is a massive celebration of Scottish heritage as the games combine athletics, highland dancing, bagpipes and other events and entertainment.

People of all ages can take part with both child and senior competitions.

Waimate Caledonian Society secretary and treasurer Bernie Blackgrove cannot wait for the games to get under way.

"It will be fantastic on the day. I love the day."

She is especially looking forward to hearing bagpipes serenade the event.

"The playing of the pipes is heard all day. That, to me, is heaven."

The games include cycling, heavy ball throw and the caber toss. Which organisers of the event, the Caledonian Society were pleased to see return this year.

"It’s the only event of its kind in Waimate and, in fact, there’s very few caledonian games in the whole country."

The games were first held on Boxing Day in 1875.

"We are the longest continually running Caledonian Games in the country."

Entries for the games were coming in slow, but Ms Blackgrove was optimistic about the turn out.

The games will get under way at 9am today at Victoria Park.
