Turf on Earnslaw Park is getting an $87,000 upgrade after heavy wear and tear by events including Winter Games NZ and the Queenstown Winter Festival.
The comprehensive work from the town pier to Steamer Wharf is believed to be the first upgrade of the park in the heart of the resort in 20 years, Queenstown Lakes District Council acting parks and commercial operations manager Paul Wilson said.
Operations general manager Ruth Stokes said the park had seen a lot of activity in recent years and ''it's reached the point where we need to replace rather than make running repairs to the grass cover''.
Work will include digging out compacted soils and replacing with better quality soil, then placing ready lawn on the top for instant cover.
Earnslaw Park, including the grass in front of Pog Mahone's Irish Pub and Prime Restaurant, will be closed for four to six weeks.
''We expect the park to be available for public use by Labour Weekend,'' Mrs Stokes said.
