Leading New Zealand folk artists will step up to honour the legacy of folk in this country, and to look to the future, in an inaugural concert for the newly-formed Aotearoa NZ Folk Alliance.

Entitled "Ballads to Blues", the concert will be held on January 3, 2023, at Hanover Hall in Dunedin, and will feature Peter Madill, Sonia Wilson and Nigel Gavin, Chris Priestley and The Eastern, with Dunedin Ceilidh Orchestra.

Doors open at 7.30pm, with the concert to start at 8pm.

Aotearoa NZ Folk Alliance founding member Mike Moroney said the acoustic music event would celebrate "the broad church that is New Zealand folk music, in what we hope will become an annual Dunedin event of outstanding performance and national folk awards".

The alliance was a national body representing folk music and its associated activities across Aotearoa, with the aim of providing information resources and networking, including awards, showcases and professional development for folk artists, he said.

"Our feeling is that people’s perception of folk music has changed and that we need to reinvigorate it in our wider communities," Moroney said.

"The ball is in our court to draw the public’s attention back to folk music, and we think we can help with that by having an organisation whose aim is to assist folk artists."

The Ballads to Blues variety concert on January 3, immediately following the Whare Flat Folk Festival,  would be a great way to introduce the Aotearoa NZ Folk Alliance and celebrate some of the country’s top folk musicians, Moroney said.
