Work is due to start next week on changes to the intersection by the new Mosgiel pool.
Traffic lights will be installed at the intersection of Gordon Rd and Eden St, which will serve as the entrance to the pool site.
Adjustments to street lighting, landscaping, footpaths and kerbs would also be carried out, the Dunedin City Council said in a statement.
The pool is due to open in mid-2023.
A stop/go sign will sometimes be used in Gordon Rd, State Highway 87, when traffic is down to one lane.
Part of Eden St, up to where it intersects with Gordon Rd, will be closed during the works.
"When construction work requires footpath closures, alternative access and crossing points will be provided," the council said.
An update from the council this month about construction of the swimming complex said four pools were nearing completion.
Sound panels had been installed on the ceiling to prevent echoing in the building.
The reception area was being gib-stopped, changing rooms painted and walkways around the pools developed.
The city council was required to consult with Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to identify the most effective, efficient and safe access to SH87 from the new pool.
Council infrastructure and development general manager Simon Drew said safety, cost and traffic speeds were among the factors weighed up by experts.
The council and Waka Kotahi held two workshops before the agency determined access to the pool should be from a signalised intersection at Eden St.
Warning lights will be installed by the nearby Silver Stream bridge.
Part of the Silverstream walkway will be closed from Monday until Saturday next week to allow stormwater infrastructure work associated with construction of the new pool.
