Young people studying at Queenstown's sole secondary school could be wearing new uniforms in 2015 if voted for by pupils, staff and parents.

Wakatipu High School unveiled the final versions of the proposed summer and winter uniforms for boys and girls in an assembly and parents evening before the end of term.

Balancing cost, appearance, functionality and supply were the criteria which influenced the uniform review process since it began last year at the request of pupils, staff and parents. The designs follow a national trend of formalising school uniforms.

Indicative costs for the proposed boys' uniform is $498, more than the existing uniform cost of $430, while the proposed girls' uniform is $593, less than the existing uniform of $640.

The board of trustees will continue to source financial support for families who could not afford the uniforms, if the school community decided to proceed with the garments.

Principal Steve Hall urged all community members to lodge their opinion on the significant issue. ''We need a high level of engagement. We need people to vote,'' Mr Hall said.

Voting closes on August 1.
