Oamaru Farmers’ Market newcomer Chopped Butchery has snagged national gold for its sausages.

The Morven-based, on-farm butchery has won a gold medal at the 2022 Great New Zealand Sausage Competition in the beef category.

This was the 25th year the sausage awards had run, and it was considered the pinnacle for New Zealand sausage and smallgoods producers.

Chopped Butchery co-owners Adam and Eddie Rivett launched the business in May.

Adam said the pair were stoked to be recognised alongside butchers who had been in business for much longer.

"It’s good recognition of all the hard work that’s gone in the last five months."

The business’ point of difference was the butchery was on-farm and the brothers only used locally-sourced meat.

It was also the only butchery in the country that specialised in Galloway cattle, Adam said.

"A lot of butcheries focus on wagyu or Angus or those probably better-known animals, but we are trying to focus on an animal that’s not so widely known in New Zealand."

Being a smaller butchery allowed them to have good control over the quality of their meat.

He stressed that what separated them from other butcheries was their devotion to remaining local.

"All our animals are farmed ... on farms that are easily within driving distance of our butchery. We know the suppliers, they know us, a family business supporting other family businesses."

Despite requests to open a shop, they remained committed to remaining mobile, but still local.
