Cops called over Dunedin man with crossbow

A man wielding a crossbow in South Dunedin was unable to give police a good reason as to why he had the weapon.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said the man was located walking down Hillside Rd with a crossbow about noon yesterday after a member of the public contacted police.

Officers spoke to the man, but he was unable to give a reasonable excuse for having the crossbow in public.

The man ‘‘seemed to think he needed it for birds’’ and for protection.

The man was referred to mental health services.
