Book sale collection van on the road

The love of books draws a tireless team of volunteers to a storage facility in Kaikorai Valley on Sundays to sort through, catalogue, and prepare tens of thousands of books for sale at the annual Regent Theatre 24 Hour Book Sale.

While the dedication of volunteers is one major aspect of the sale’s success, another is the constant flow of books donated by the people of Dunedin.

Long-standing book sale volunteer Andy Henderson said the volume of books that came "out of the woodwork" each year was amazing.

"The support we receive for the book sale is really wonderful, both through donations and people coming along to the sale to stock up on books," he said.

"The book sale has been such an important event in Dunedin for the past 40 years.

"It helps to keep books in circulation — rather than lingering on book shelves, they find their way back into people’s hands. And of course, it helps to support the Regent Theatre."

Regent Theatre Book Sale volunteers will be out and about in Dunedin, collecting books this Sunday, October 30.
