It could be Canterbury’s day

Oh horror of horrors.

Otago fans avert your eyes.

Canterbury could get its name on all three rugby trophies on offer this weekend.

Canterbury, South Canterbury and Mid Canterbury will contest the NPC and Heartland Championship finals.

Canterbury hosts Wellington in the NPC final in Christchurch tonight, while earlier in the day South Canterbury plays Whanganui for the Meads Cup in Timaru.

Mid Canterbury heads to Ruatoria to jostle with Ngati Porou East Coast for the Lochore Cup tomorrow afternoon.

Canterbury has been the form team in the NPC. It lost just the one game this season.

Wellington started slowly but has won eight games in a row to reach the final.

It collected its last NPC title in 2000 when it beat Canterbury 34-29 in Christchurch.

The Red and Blacks have won 11 titles since that match, whereas Wellington has been in eight finals and lost all of them, including four to Canterbury.

Whanganui has won the Meads Cup six times but South Canterbury is the defending champion and favourite.

The East Coast edged Mid Canterbury 36-34 in Ashburton earlier in the season and will have home advantage for the Lochore Cup final.
