Cradling Sophie Flack on her first birthday yesterday are (from left) her mother Natasha Flack (28), grandmother Debra Sparks (50), both of Dunedin, great-grandmother Judith Archer (72) and great-great-grandmother Iris Montier (94), both from the Waikato.

Sophie's mother Natasha said it was ''very special'' having so many maternal generations together to mark the birthday.

The ''close-knit family'' had planned the celebrations for some time. The two oldest - great-grandmother Judith Archer and great-great-grandmother Iris - had come from Ngatea, in the Waikato.

Dr Flack liked to ''keep the special traditional things alive'' and looked forward to showing her daughter photos from the weekend.

Mrs Montier said she never thought she would be alive to see a great-great-granddaughter. It was ''in the lap of the Gods'' whether she would be around to see more offspring, she said.
